Prevalence of chronic wet cough, protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB) and middle ear disease in the Kimberley

This project aims to determine the prevalence of chronic wet cough, PBB and middle ear disease in Aboriginal children in Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley.

Investigators

Pamela Laird, André Schultz, Jaffri Kuthubutheen, Tamara Veselinovic, Greta Bernabei, and Tiffany Bradshaw.

Aim

To determine the prevalence of chronic lung and middle ear diseases in Aboriginal children in remote Kimberley Aboriginal communities and to understand if there is a relationship between middle ear and lung disease and what environmental factors may contribute to the burden of disease.

Project description

This project is a longitudinal cohort study of over 500 Aboriginal children aged 0-18 years in four remote west Kimberely communities. The project has been a long term collaboration with each remote community and the Kimberely Aboriginal Medical Service.  By The Kids researchers partnering with local Aboriginal navigators we have provided widespread lung and ear health information and helped identify ear and lung disease early and facilitate timely medical help. We are able to investigate the relationship between middle ear and chronic lung disease in Aboriginal children and to follow-up children to track outcomes of lung and ear disease when annual specialist screening and good primary care health provision is in place.
